The Flexican

The Flexican

Far from being arrogant, we are still the flexest

So translates the refrain in one of the tracks of the theatrical piece ‘Kings’. The entire soundtrack of this spectacle has been produced by The Flexican. Therefore, there is no arrogance in this twenty-two year old DJ cum producer when he loudly joins in the chorus in the video clip of his rap group Flinke Namen (Brave Names).

The Flexican was born in 1983 in Mexico City. When he is eight years old he moves to Holland. Six years later he decides to swap his drum set for a set of turntables and emerges as a fanatical underground Hip Hop DJ and turntablist. Soon he starts digging to the roots of Hip Hop samples and breaks. After passing old soul, funk, rock, and disco he ultimately hits house, latin, and broken beats. As the true eclectic he is, he starts using these influences in his DJ sets, and even his name refers to this road: The Flexican. He flexibly moves in and between various music tendencies.
When he is seventeen he starts producing music of his own. For a professional approach he completes the SAE Audio Engineering course in Amsterdam.
With his mix cds The Flexican increasingly figures in the media. And as a consequence he is offered opportunities to perform in both mainstream and underground parties. RUSH, Bitterzoet, Latin Village, Bacardi Batbeats, WickedJazzSounds, KISS, Jimmy Woo, Girls Love DJ’s, and NOW&WOW are some of the names in The Flexican’s diary. In order to keep abreast of the latest developments in music The Flexican works in the specialised record shop Rhythm Import & Dancetracks in Amsterdam.
DJ Real El Canario becomes charmed by what The Flexican does with the concrete result that he is enrolled in the POW! Deejays booking office which handles also, for instance, Real and the DVD DJs Off The Wall. As a producer, audio engineer and DJ he also becomes a member of the rap group Flinke Namen (Brave Names) consisting of the rappers Sef Nice & Mc Fit. As an engineer and executive producer The Flexican is one of the forces of the NFP (Not For Profit) project that has been initiated to promote young Hip Hop talents.
In 2004 The Flexican participates in the SCAREFACED project of the theatre group Made in da Shade. He supplies the track ‘Pelikanen’ for the accompanying soundtrack, makes the mix tape and acts as the resident DJ during the tour. 2005 can rightly be called the year in which The Flexican enjoys his breakthrough. He produces the entire soundtrack for the theatrical piece ‘Kings’, in which acts such as Big Boy Caprice, Sticks (Swollen), Typhoon, Pete Philly, and QF take part.
The Flexican also takes care of the musical part of the JUIZE.FM’s radio program Zuiver in close co-operation with Brian Elstak. The show can be listened to every Sunday from 20.00 to 23.00 hrs. at www.juize.fm.
At present The Flexican works at the debut album of Flinke Namen which has as its working title ‘The Greatest Hits’. Work is about to be started at a solo project that will delectably astound both the Hip Hop scene and the dance scene.
